Frank Sinatra - The Icon Lives On In Vinyl

Frank Sinatra was mentioned by various names in his heyday, and though he is best recognized for his voice, he was also a reputable thespian and an icon. In 1954, Frankie even won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 'From Here to Eternity'. Coming into the world on December 12th, 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, Francis Albert Sinatra did not finish high school and never learned how to read music, but was still able to grow into one of the most cherished performers in entertainment.
In 1935, Sinatra received his big break as a member of the Hoboken Four, and by 1941, he was a successful solo artist. By the late 1940's, Sinatra felt that his career had reached its peak, and he decided to expand into acting, co-starring in 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' with Gene Kelly in 1949.
While singing at the Copacabana in 1950, Sinatra suffered hemorrhaging in his vocal cords and feared that it would be the end of his run. Sinatra was able to come to his senses following a failed suicide attempt, and in shorter than a year's time, he made his mark in Las Vegas at the Desert Inn.
In 1953, while continuing to work in the motion pictures and television industry, he signed with Capitol records, chose to reinvent himself, and produced a few of his most well-known hits like 'Come Fly With Me', 'Young At Heart', and 'I've Got You Under My Skin'. He was proclaimed the Top Male Vocalist by Billboard, Metronome, and Down Beat by the end of the year and Frank Sinatra vinyl was more loved than ever.
More successful than ever, Sinatra was back, and now he was involved in every aspect of the entertainment industry. It was no surprise that he and his famous friends joined together to become one of the most notable groups of all time, the Rat Pack. Along with famous associates such as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., the Rat Pack also included members like Judy Garland and Katherine Hepburn. With the inclusion of peter Lawford, who happened to be the brother-in-law of President Kennedy, they were as powerful as you might imagine, the entourage was untouchable.
In 1995, Sinatra made his last televised appearance during a celebration for his 80th birthday in New York City, where he joined an ensemble for the final few lines of 'New York, New York'. Sinatra passed away and the world lost one of its brightest stars on May 14th, 1998, at the age of 82. Ol' Blue Eyes, though he is no longer with us, will be remembered forever, and his classic vinyl will play across the world for centuries to come.

With the popularity of American Idol and America's Got Talent, there are many budding songbirds out there. Plenty of folks with hidden talents are coming out of the woodwork. So to optimize your chances, you should jump at the opportunity to create your own professional sound recordings. For all you fantastic future artistes who are blessed with a singing talent but no instrumental prowess, there is a solution.
To begin with you will need this simple equipment:
A Multi-Track Recording Software Program with MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) capability and ideally a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
Some popular and reputable programs include Adobe Audition, Garage Band(for Apple), Reaper, and Sonar. Any of these systems will allow you to record your vocals on top of a pre-bought or downloaded MIDI track, not to mention allow you to record your own backing tracks if you play an instrument.
A MIDI Keyboard
A MIDI keyboard is essential for adding the virtual instruments you will need to complete your recordings. There are many models out there from many well-known brands including Korg, Akai and M-Audio. Personally, I use one similar to the Korg microKEY for this. It's small and sits right on my computer desk.
A Decent Microphone
Your computer's built-in microphone is probably not up to the task for creating professional audio. However, despite what most experts and music store employees will tell you, it is not necessary to buy an expensive microphone. These days you can enter the zone of professional quality audio for the cost of a good USB microphone, such as the Samson Q1U for $49. This was not possible just a few years ago, but the quality of these USB mics in 2011 is very good.
When you have all your equipment the next thing you'll need is the audio tracks you want to sing along to. If you don't already have a recording set-up on your computer and if you don't play any instruments, fear not. Across the web you will find downloadable MIDI versions of many popular hits. Some of these sites also have audio tracks of these songs with the vocals removed. Some of the best sites include: Midi-Hits, Cybermidi, and Hittrax. MIDI tracks are available on these sites for a few bucks and will allow you to basically have you're your own band.
Once you have downloaded your track, you will need to import your MIDI backing track into your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). In the majority of programs you will find a basic IMPORT/INSERT button and by using this you can import your track. As soon as your track is imported all you need to do is plug your mic into the computer, press the record button and sing along. You have the opportunity to mix the perfect track for your next live performance, karaoke party, or demo recording for that audition.
As you're in control of the mixing board as well as the vocals, you can edit your track post-production. If you notice a slight wobble in your voice, you can erase it. If you need to up the tempo you can. If you notice the track is in the wrong pitch for your vocal range, you can change it. Using this innovative software you can edit your track until its note perfect. Maximise the value of your natural talents and maximise your chances of commercial success.
Get Your Own Band Now
The opportunity to work from your own home studio at your computer screen is fantastic. You can work in the comfort of your own home and test out as many different tracks and samples as you desire, without the worry of the cost of studio time. If you're really serious about a career in music, investing in some decent software, a range of MIDI tracks and a decent quality microphone could seriously boost your chances. Who knows, you could be the next big star!

Information On USB Microphones

The USB microphone is designed to use in laptops or personal computers. The USB mics help the user to take part in the online discussions, utilize voice identification software and also collect notes for his class. It involves "plug and then play" technology which is usually associated with the USB ports. The devices using the USB mechanism are highly popular because of its easy operation. You just plug the device into USB slot and very soon it would get charged up and start running. You will find different sorts of USB microphones available in the market. They vary highly in terms of quality, price, compatibility and characteristics. Some of the USB mics could even be integrated with other USB instruments like computer cameras, headphones and many more. These mics consist of a preamplifier, a microphone capsule, an analog-digital transformer and a USB chip for interfacing all these onto your computer. This is actually the entire input portion of sound card that comes with an in-built microphone.
The basic USB mics comprises of the mic itself to speak into. The microphone comes with USB (Universal Serial Bus) kind plug which gets connected with the USB port directly. These gadgets have a number of varied uses like speaking to individuals on different computers, recording podcast, recording music accompanying gaming, video and many more. The quality of USB microphones determines its uses and needs. There are both poor and high quality USB mics for recording at the studio level for recording podcast or super quality music.
The USB microphones are found in various varieties and styles. They are also armed with many different features. Many of these come with the noise cancelling mechanism that filters out the undesired background noise. Some of the mics are armed with flexibility regarding the position of this desktop mic. They come with mounting devices, pivots, longer cords to customize the placing efficiently, preventing movement. Again, some of the USB mics is characterized by a muting switch which turns your device off and on very easily for privacy. The microphone position is determined by the quality and specifications of the mic itself. Always remember, the mic must not be too close to the audio source. The only exception would be when the microphone is attached to a headset. The USB mic which cancels external interference and noise comes with greater flexibility regarding the position conducive for optimum audio quality. Besides, this is necessary to note that the USB mic must be kept away from the computer speakers. It is because the closer proximity between the two leads to a feedback.

All About Amon Amarth

In 1988 a grindcore band by the name of Scum was formed in the town of Tumba, Sweden by vocalist Paul "Themgoroth" Mäkitalo, guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Vesa Meriläinen, and drummer Nico Mehra. Shortly after their formation, Johan Hegg replaced Mäkitalo on vocals, and the band we know today as Amon Amarth began to take shape.
After releasing a demo in 1991, Scum officially changed their name Amon Amarth, after the Sindarin translation of Mount Doom from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, and recorded their first demo under the new moniker, entitled Thor Arise, in 1993. With the name change, the band began to change their sound to a more death metal approach consisting of Viking-inspired lyrics. At this time the band consisted of Ted Lundström on bass, Olavi Mikkonen on guitars, Anders Hansson also on guitars, and Nico Kaukinen on drums. After another demo (The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter) and an EP (Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds 1996), the band singed to the record label that would be home from this point on, Metal Blade, and released their debut full length, Once Sent from the Golden Hall.
In 1998, as Amon Amarth was readying for their largest tour to date, with Deicide, Six Feet Under, and Brutal Truth, guitarist Anders Hansson abruptly left the band and was replaced with Johan Soderberg. After the tour the band lost yet another member, Martin Lopez, to Opeth. Ex-A Canorous Quintet drummer Fredrik Andersson replaced him. These last two departures and replacements have been the bands only since then.
The band has since gone on to record and release albums The Avenger (1999), The Crusher (2001), Verses the World (2002), Fate of The Norns (2004), With Oden On Our Side (2006), Twilight of the Thunder God (2008) and most recently, Surtur Rising in 2011. The band has also toured the world alongside such acts as Himsa, Dimmu Borgir, Sonic Syndicate, Vomitory, Vader, Marduk and numerous others.
Perhaps the band's most critically and fan acclaimed record is 2006's With Oden on Our Side. This album was the band's first to enter the Billboard charts peaking at number 15 on the Top Heatseekers, and number 26 on the Independent Albums chart. The cover art for the record is somewhat of a departure for the band, where they usually have busy, painted covers with Vikings or Viking imagery, and instead features a simple rendering of the Norse God Odin riding on his horse, Sleipnir with the Valknut symbol in the background. The inspiration for the art comes from the legendary Tjängvide image stone. The band's most recent album, Surtur Rising, also showed the band taking something of a departure from their norm and covering a total of three songs from Accept (Balls to the Wall), Kiss (War Machine), and even System of A Down (Aerials). The last time the band featured a cover on one of their albums was on 2002's Verses the World, which featured a cover of Black Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on the bonus disc.
All of Amon Amarth's albums have strong Viking themes leading many to mis-categorize the band as Viking Metal. The band has refuted this claim many times stating that they do not see themselves as making pagan music or Viking metal, instead, they are a death metal band with Viking lyrics.
Amon Amarth's legacy is that of a hard-working, dedicated band that releases consistently great records and has influenced a generation of bands that followed them. With eight studio albums, seven music videos, numerous Canadian and US tours, appearances in over 100 metal magazines, Amon Amarth have fashioned a place for themselves in heavy metal history... and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Huzzah!

BDB - The Video Collection by Badly Drawn Boy (2004)

In the early part of the new millennium a hero arose. He was a bobble-hatted loafer who happened to write amazing melodies and engaging lyrics. Damon Gough - AKA Badly Drawn Boy - was that man. He still is in fact.
In his first DVD, BDB - The Video Collection (released in 2004), Badly Drawn Boy's first three albums, plus preceding EP releases, are featured. Shown in reverse chronological order, like some musical Benjamin Button, the videos remind us just how talented Gough is and how commercially successful this period of his career was.
In the 'play all' format the DVD opens up with All Possibilities, showing BDB busking outside London's King's Cross Station. He made less than £14 for his shift but had the fallback of knowing that the song was his 8thtop 40 hit single.
Next follow two more songs from Have You Fed The Fish? - each showcasing Gough's songwriting flair. However, it was his first two albums where the real diamonds in his career lie. From the excellent soundtrack to About A Boy, starring Hugh Grant, the videos Something To Talk About and Silent Sigh are taken. Gough's star at the time is apparent through the appearances of Hugh Grant and the legendary Countdown presenter Richard Whiteley in the videos. The robotic, half-animated video for Silent Sigh matches perfectly with the piano/drums rhythm that underpins the entire tune.
A quartet of songs is taken from the Mercury Music Prize winning The Hour of Bewilderbeast. Joan Collins turns a beautiful trick in Spitting In The Wind as Gough shows her the way to love; smart-suit, bobble hat and all. The best video in the collection is Disillusion showing Gough running around Manhattan with a yellow taxi t-shirt and offering punters a co-carry around the streets. My experience of Manhattan suggests this would be a quicker way from A to B anyway.
There are four extra videos, with a personal favourite of mine in My Friend Cubilas and a trio of live performances.
BDB - The Video Collection is a fine testament to a fine talent. Gough's later career has floundered somewhat, but he is still an exceptional live performer with an equally exceptional back catalogue as evidenced in these videos.
